Chain of Custody Tri-Certification

Chain of custody certifications ensure that paper used in printing is obtained from forests that are managed in an environmentally responsible manner. As a part of our commitment to preserving our natural resources, we have three chain of custody certifications (PEFC, SFI and FSC) and we only use papers that are certified by one of these credible programs. For more information, see our Green FAQ tab at the top of the page.

We're proud to announce that we have Chain of Custody certification from three organizations selectively representing all of our paper products: PEFC, SFI® and FSC®. All three certification programs are designed to ensure that paper used in printing is obtained from forests that are managed in an environmentally responsible manner.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Chain of Custody and why is it important?

Chain of Custody (CoC) is the process of tracking and recording the possession and transfer of wood and fiber from the forests of origin through the different stages of production—primary manufacturing, secondary manufacturing, wholesaling, and retailing—to the end user. Companies interested in demonstrating that their products are made from responsibly managed forests, and not from areas that were illegally harvested, major tropical wilderness areas, or bio diversity hotspots need CoC certification.

What are the certification organizations?
Are your papers tri-certified?

A single paper type cannot be certified by more than one organization because of trademark infringement regulations. While Modern Postcard has three Chain of Custody certifications, each paper type is only able to have one type of certification.

How does my company benefit from Modern Postcard's certifications?

Making Modern Postcard your direct marketing partner of choice demonstrates your commitment to protecting our forests and meeting the market's increasing propensity to purchase paper products from enviro-friendly sources. It satisfies customer demands while giving them a positive perception of your company. It allows you to keep pace or even edge out your competition. And it strengthens your brand.

Can we use the certification logos on our postcards?

Yes. We have demonstrated a proficiency and expertise in understanding and utilizing all three certification body's logos according to their stringent guidelines. Each certification body adheres to strict rules guiding the use of their respective logos. In order for Modern to remain certified, we must abide by their specifications whenever we print their logos or trademarks on any product we produce for our clients.

What is PEFC?

PEFC is the world's largest forest certification organization. It is an international non-profit, non-governmental organization dedicated to promoting sustainable forest management. For more information about the PEFC, visit http://www.pefc.org/

What is FSC?

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an international organization that brings people together to find solutions and establish standards for the wood fiber industry. Their goal is to ensure environmentally responsible, socially beneficial, and economically viable management of the world's forests.

It accredits independent third party organizations who can certify forest managers and forest product producers to FSC standards. Its trademark provides international recognition to organizations that support the growth of responsible forest management. Supporters of FSC include The National Wildlife Foundation, The Nature Conservancy, Sierra Club and the World Wildlife Fund.

For more information about the FSC program, visit http://www.fsc.org.

What is SFI?

The Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI) program is based on the premise that responsible environmental behavior and sound business decisions can co-exist. Participants practice sustainable forestry on all the lands they manage. They also influence millions of additional acres through the training of loggers and foresters in best management practices and landowner outreach programs.

This unique commitment to sustainable forestry recognizes that all forest landowners, not just SFI program participants, play a critical role in ensuring the long-term health and sustainability of our forests. For more information about the SFI program, visit http://www.sfiprogram.org

Does Modern Postcard recycle?

Yes. Modern Postcard recycles everything possible within its corporation from production processes to employee trash including paper, wood, aluminum and plastics.

Does Modern Postcard use alternatives to petroleum oil based inks?

Our inks are a blend of soy oil, other vegetable oil, and petroleum oil. ASA's (American Soy Association) definition of soy-based ink is when 20% of the oil in the ink is derived from soy. Our current inks average approximately 17% soy oil, 6% other vegetable oil, and petroleum oil.

I'm an amateur photographer in Brooklyn. My neighbors love my Brownstone neighborhood photos, and this year I took the leap and started a small greeting card business using my photos! At first, the process seemed intimidating, but the customer service at Modern made it easy. I used the phone and email for help, and everyone was very nice, professional and supportive. The finished product speaks for itself...the cards are gorgeous! I am using them for my personal holiday cards, as well as selling them online and in small local businesses. I can't wait to prepare my second set of photo cards with Modern Postcard.
